About the maker
Asha Juma
The ocean, wrapped in cloth.
What we make
Soft kanga and kikoy textile goods -- wraps, slings, pillows and totes -- sewn in the old Swahili way.
Why we make it
To keep kanga as a living language for women on the coast, with every proverb stitched still readable.
How it's made
Fabrics are sourced from Mombasa mills, washed in sea-salt water, then cut and hand-finished on a treadle Singer under a coconut roof.
